I have been there three times.
And the location more than perfect.
Classic old design, but with a distinctive modern character.
A special welcome in this hotel
**The hotel operator is the Marriott Corporation
The doormen and bell staff were gracious and efficient. Our bags were already being delivered to our room with perfect timing as we were being walked to our room. Gracious goodbyes and hellos were given as we came and went from the hotel. Oddly however there was often a person who appeared to be a front office manager (in black jacket) speaking with the doormen. When you approached him he would not speak to you and would point you to the doorman. Perhaps he was security but it was odd nonetheless. I did try to make them aware of a carpet issue on the main stairs below floor 2 where the padding was coming out from under the carpet. This issue was never fixed prior to our departure.
Our check in was also very friendly and efficient.
While the dining staff was kind and friendly the breakfast crew was beyond exceptional. Everyone working in the morning from the omelet chef to the wait staff were extremely cheerful and welcoming. The female night restaurant manager was also exceptionally hospitable and welcoming. I was impressed with all restaurant management that they were all hands on and helping with the work vs just overseeing it with the staff only doing the labor. A sign of very good leadership.
Tea service was pleasant but a bit slow in the delivery of the sandwichs. To be fair I don't think many take this service.
Housekeeping was efficient but was at our door at 9am ready to clean the room. One morning we left shortly thereafter and she was standing outside the room ready to immediately come in. The second morning she did not reappear until 3:30 pm to clean the room. A bit odd how it was so spotty as to the time the room was cleaned. Regardless, it is important to know that the housekeepers are very particular where everything goes. Therefore if you try to move anything to make the space more useful to you the housekeepers will move it back to the way it was and not keep it that way. It was kind of amusing. The public restrooms on the ground floor could receive better cleaning service as this was the one area I found lacking in cleanliness with the toilet areas and sink messy. (See photos below)
With the rooms do be aware that if you face the inner courtyard the rooms across from you are visible. Therefore be sure to remain decently dressed, or have the curtains closed, if you do not want to be viewed in an uncomfortable position.
Also amusing was how the hotel management decided the best time to shutdown the electricity for their testing of the electric system was 7am at the peak of their breakfast period and when all guests are getting ready for the day. It was the first breakfast by candlelight I have experienced and did get a bit annoying as it continued on with no electricity available to power the kitchen for breakfast service. Why they didn't select later in the day to do this electrical system testing, when guests would have been outside of the hotel and not inconvenienced, was confusing.
The facility itself was magnificent and stately. Clearly a Grande Dame property in the busy Roman metropolis. The hotel did have a shuttle van we saw but not sure how one could use it, or where exactly it might go. For those who workout on their travel be aware that they keep their workout area very warm. One small standing fan was trying, poorly, to cool the area. That said the fitness area was well equipped for a hotel gym.
Definitely a place I would recommend and go back to despite the few oddities we encountered.
L'eccellenza non tramonta mai.
