HOTEL KLAUSTUR

A year ago-ish my fiancée and I stayed here overnight and enjoyed a clean comfortable room, excellent and professional service, and the stunning and peaceful area of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. We told them that we were recently engaged and they surprised us with two small bottles of champagne and some little chocolates. The breakfast was delicious and more satisfying and diverse than other hotels, too.
I was, and am, impressed with how fancy everything felt thanks to the staff's care and mannerisms and will definitely come back to stay overnight, though we didn't this most recent time.
So onto the real reason for my five stars, the Hotel Klaustur Restaurant.
A year ago we booked a table for dinner. My fiancée ordered the hamburger and I ordered the char. No big deal. My dinner was delicious and I cleaned my plate with some difficulty because their pre-dinner fresh baked bread and whipped butter on a stone was so good I had trouble stopping myself. Okay, pretty good!
Except he said then, and continued saying for the next year and a half, that it was the BEST hamburger he's EVER EATEN. EVER. It's not hyperbole. He didn't shut up about it, I say lovingly. We went to other places in Reykjavík after and tried their burgers and it was the same verdict every time: the Hotel Klaustur Restaurant burger was THE BEST.
It haunted me because the hotel is a four hour drive from my home in Reykjavík, but I assured him we'd go back one day, even if just for the food.
Last night, we did just that. We went on a day trip all the way along the south coast, with no car snacks, and arrived at the hotel restaurant just in time for our reservation, hungry and me a little anxious that the food had changed or wouldn't live up to his remembered hype.
I ordered the lamb and he the burger, and while we waited they brought us some fresh baked bread and whipped date butter on a stone sprinkled with sea salt and it was just as good as we remembered if not better. The staff were very professional and maybe a little amused that we didn't actually have a hotel room there and just came for the food. I tried not to eat too much bread this time with the thought that I might take some with us when we left.
The moment of truth came. My plate was gorgeous, the lamb succulent and tender and perfectly cooked, the potatoes and pearl onions a delightful accompaniment. His humble burger plate was similar to how we remembered, with crunchy double-fried french fries and the burger with sweet pickled onions and kimchi, smelling like the mana of heaven.
The first bite he took, I swear he was going to cry. It was PERFECT, exactly like he remembered though the bread was a bit smaller this time. With juices dripping into his plate and a smile like a man who'd achieved true happiness, I almost got a little jealous for the hamburger because I don't think he's ever looked at me like that as blissfully happy as we are together.
I tasted it too and darn if he wasn't onto something. We shared our food and slowly finished, our long road trip fully worth it, and gave many compliments to the server for the chef. With no room for dessert, I nonetheless requested some of that incredible bread to go, and not only did they give us some free of charge but also a little plastic bowl of that whipped butter. My husband's only regret was that he ate it so quickly. Maybe next time we'll get one to-go as well and hope it's still good after our long road trip back to the city.
I absolutely would come back again even for just the food, and highly recommend the hotel itself to anyone wanting a quiet, scenic location for their vacation. Just make sure you eat at the restaurant too.
