Son of a Gun has extremely deceptive pricing policies. Rather than the norm of incorporating the cost of employee wages into prices like an honest business would do, they put lower menu prices, and then tack on a “service charge“ of 18%. This puts the customer in the uncomfortable of compromising on your servers tip or paying an exorbitant amount. If you leave a 20% tip for your server, the total cost is 38% higher than what the menu would have you believe. This should not be legal in Los Angeles should do something about it. Don’t go here and encourage the deceptive pricing policies of this restaurant! The food is good, but it’s not that good!

Restaurant charges a hidden 18% service charge which is NOT a tip. A new law preventing this comes into effect on 7/1/24. Can’t believe places like this continue to scam customers until the law stops them. If you need to pay your employees more, increase your prices. Stop stealing from your patrons.

From the moment we walked through the door (early) for our reservation, Ren was super accommodating and welcoming! The bartender was amazing and made excellent local suggestions for things for us to do. Our server Brent was a fantastic menu tour guide, and really was on point on timing the pace of the meal. We were visiting from Richmond, Va and picked this place on a recommendation, and now I see why. 100% woukd recommend!

Got there a bit earlier than our reservation and was able to be seated early! Every server/ bartender we talked to was outstanding and it was overall a welcoming atmosphere. Food was exceptional as well! My father and I got the lobster roll and shrimp toast!

Why did it take me so long to come here?? Always heard about this place but never visited — but soooo good. Very accommodating, the seafood was killer, the fries fresh and crisp (and that malt vinegar aioli… yum), and the vibe excellent. There’s a reason this place has been around for a while now — it’s solid and I’ll definitely be back.

The simple seafood orient menu is solid. The drinks were mixed- my old fashioned was just on, but my wife's drink was spot on. Wait staff were friendly. My only gripe is that this restaurant tacks on a 18% service charge that is not a gratuity. Thank goodness this will end in July due to legislation, but it's a terrible policy. Just price the food correctly.

Billing terrible. They added an 18 pct gratuity fee and then asked for at least a 20 percent tip on top of that claiming a gratuity was not the same as a tip. This used to happen in the 1970s in Europe before it was outlawed and I would predict the same here. It is completely dishonest if the idea is to artificially set prices lower and fool the customer. It’s a shame because food and service were fine. So as long as you understand the game it’s ok but to play the game detracts from the dining experience. We are here to relax not to watch our wallets.

The food was great . However , I was charged a service (14%charge ) and it was just me . Not sure why ? I guess it would be better to get take out if it’s just you . Parking is difficult. I always found street parking a few blocks over .

Recommended to me as a good seafood restaurant but sadly it fell down in most areas. The two mains that we chose were the trout and clam linguine. When the linguine came out I thought they had made a mistake and it was a starter size, but no it was the main! It also lacked taste. The trout was excellent. I ordered a bottle of wine that was forgotten about until I reminded the staff and ended up only having a glass as I had mostly finished my meal at that stage. To be fair the restaurant deleted the cost of the linguine as we expressed our surprise about the size. The restaurant includes an automatic 18% service charge which impacted the amount that we tipped. Sadly will not be back or recommending.

18% “service charge” doesn’t include tip. Note, if you tip 20% of the total bill before taxes, you would be paying more than 38% of your actual food prices because that service charge is added into the total.

Tasty food, good service. SEVERELY disappointed in the 18% Service Charge that is not (???) a tip. Lazy owners placing the burden on customers to tip twice aka 36-40% (!!!!) so they can pay their employees living wages. What a joke. Never coming back. Never recommending. Stay away from this scam. I feel sorry for the staff at this establishment. There are far better restaurants in Los Angeles that don't take advantage of their staff and customers.

Food was great as usual
8.15 pm shift
Friday night
Long Time friends reunion
Restaurant almost empty besides another table
Never felt so unwanted somewhere
Full staff was on the clock
Waiter interrupted us every 15 min :
8.45 pm Last call for food when we just go our starters
9.00 pm last call for desert
9.15 pm last call for drinks
9.30 pm got the check .. the Guy came twice in a 7 min time frame
18% gratuity automatically included but not obviously mentionned on the check
9.45 pm full lights on chairs on the tables and manager coming to us with an explicite « you have to go »body language

I will never step foot in that restaurant again

The food here is quite good, but pricey for what you get. We ordered the chips with caramelized onion dip, fried chicken sandwich and the caesar salad. The Caesar salad was really good. The chicken sandwich was good but kind of disintegrated quickly. I have to echo the other reviewers that the whole mandatory service charge thing is not cool, if it's not a tip.

Sneaky 18% service charge means most people only visit here once.

18% surcharge "service fee" on top of tip!
Food was great and even got food recommendations by our waiter.
Unfortunately it does come with a 18% service fee which does not cover tip/gratuity. So you end up paying almost 40%.
We live in the San Francisco Bay Area so we are fairly used to additional service fees / living surcharge, but I have never seen anything like this!

It is mentioned on the menu, but I thought maybe it was a typo...????‍????

It is unfortunate as the food was great. Place was fairly empty (just two other diners on a Saturday lunch hour, likely also out of towners)

The food was good, the service was ok, even though the restaurant is pricey the restaurant charges an 18% service fee and states this isn't a tip. So if you leave a tip there is a 40% premium on your meal. Outrageous is an understatement.

I wouldn't go there. They're the group that charges 18% on top of your regular bill while stating that the extra charge goes towards all of their employees. The problem is that the employees, according to an LA Times article, can't find any proof that anything of the 18% goes to them.
In practical terms, that means if one tips the servers 20% since they couldn't afford to live otherwise, you end up paying 148% of the cost of the meal.
It could, therefore, be possible to assume that the 18% goes to the employees, and the owners most likely have their corporation pay themselves the owners a salary, the owners are giving themselves an EXTRA 18%.
This might not be true to some extent but, one has to wonder.

For me, go there? Hahaha

Ordered 2 large Lobster rolls for pick up. I’m being really honest here by saying we were disappointed. They are not your usual lobster roll. They’re more lobster salad with an overpowering taste of mayonnaise. I love lobster rolls and I only wish the menu stated that they’re not the usual Lobster meat on a roll. For $39 each…I was expecting better than the quality we received. Off to find a different place for legitimate lobster rolls.

Food was ok but overpriced for what it was.
Everything was ok until we got the bill. 18% “service fee” added to the bill. Requested that it be removed but they refused. Most restaurants that do this will remove it upon request. These fees are usually described as something that benefits the employees. I would’ve thought my continued patronage plus my generally generous tip would benefit the employees, but when it’s foisted upon me in such a manner, we don’t return. If there was something special about Son of a Gun we’d bite the bullet, but alas, I’m afraid there’s not…

This is a great restaurant. Consistency is one of the most valuable aspects apart from an amazing culinary experience. We’ve been eating here for 4 years and never disappointed.
Not fancy, but with style.
The trout amandine is very good. As well as the chicken sandwich!!!

Totally recommend this place.

Yeah, this place was a bummer. %18 percent service charge on top of gratuity? You pay your employees through your profits, not by passing the buck to your guests. Bad biz guys. Not great for your servers.
