What an outstanding find just off State Street. The food was presented so beautifully and the plates exploded with lively, seasonal flavors. From the stunningly simple and elegant interior, to the friendly wait staff with smiles on their faces, this spot is a total gem.

Very nice brasserie. The atmosphere is casual chic and the service is quietly attentive. Based on the two dishes we ordered, the food is simple, yet cooked elegantly, perfectly, and very delicious.

We decided to split an appetizer and a main. To start, we had the beet and chevre "cheesecake." This was goat cheese whipped up with some beets or beet juice and served with more beets and topped with a crumble. The dish was inspired. The tangy goat cheese needed something to balance it and the beets performed admirably. Plus, it was larger than a couple of bites, so it was a perfect dish to share before the entrée.

We had the coq au vin for our main. So good! We've had this dish many times in restaurants over the years and have made it ourselves too, but this was the best version we've ever had. The sauce was not too thick, very very rich, and slightly sweet, maybe including some Marsala wine? The chicken literally fell off the bones, to the point we could eat 100% of the meat and not leave anything on the plate. Carrots, turnips, and creamy potatoes completed the dish. Outstanding.

This is not fussy food administered in multiple micro-courses. It's hearty, simple, yet delicately flavored. We enjoyed ourselves a lot at the Black Sheep and we'll be back again next time we're in town.

Highly recommended.

Do not miss their tasting menu. Wow. Our faves this visit included ahi crudo, short ribs, molten chocolate and a perfect creme brule'. Helpful and friendly staff. Creative wine cocktails. We will be back soon for the lamb trio.

Maybe something was off for my first time trying this place. The food was not good and definitely not worth the price. I ordered the catch of the day which was supposed to be seared, but after an unusually long wait, it came extra charred on the outside and the fish was not fresh. I ordered a pinot which was a bit bitter, then had a wine cocktail which was good, thankfully. The french fries were pretty good too. My date ordered a chicken dish which was a bit cold and mostly made up of one chicken leg. Wanted to like this place but maybe we went on an off night since we chose it due to the good reviews.

Went for special event dinner; tables so close together along walls only about 1 foot apart. Very uncomfortable. The food was ok, nothing special; very expensive; the waitress did not inform us that the dessert would require and extra 30+ minutes to prepare so we sat waiting. Very bad form. That is the basic job of waitress to advise you of menu situation.
We will not return. Too bad because it should have been better.

Can’t rave enough about this place. Get the tasting menu, it is the best value for money i have ever had. Food is amazing, and nice place with great service. Only thing I could complain about is that they give you so much amazing food, it was impossible not to overeat lol.

We got the tasting menu. Too dry or salty - very mediocre. However it’s great value for your money!

Fabulous food - highly recommend the tasting menu. Service was both attentive and thoughtful. Beautiful space - feels formal but not imposingly so.

Note: prices have gone up. Tasting menu was $65 just a few months ago. Now $72 (still worth it).

Also they charge a credit card fee that was a surprise at the end of the meal. I would have felt better about it, if they had mentioned the fee somewhere on the menu (at the start of our delicious meal).

Our second visit and we decided to do the tasting menu, which includes 8 or 9 dishes to share over 4 courses. Service was attentive and helpful even though the restaurant was full. The food was delicious and reasonable. Highlights included the marrow toast, Brussels peanut slaw, albacore crudo, and braised shortribs.

Fine food, poor service.

We had a reservation, yet experienced lengthy wait times to be seated, to order, and for our food to come.

Staff said that rain impacted their seating and kitchen orders, which I totally understand. However, rain has been forecasted for many days, given one of the biggest storms is on the horizon.

Staff seemed ill prepared to deal with what was very expected weather.

Someone recently asked me what my favorite restaurant is in SB, and I said probably Black Sheep. Just went here last night and yep, still my favorite. You can tell they put thought and effort in to each dish. I always get the duck confit dish as it's something really time consuming to make at home. And theirs is always appropriately crispy. This time they had a cassoulet. My wife got the coq au vin. Both delicious and paired well with the Grenache we ordered. The squash apple bisque with a kick was downed instantly. And to top it off probably my favorite dessert to date in town, a crispy hot chocolate upsidedown cake with fruit syrup, ice cream and crunchy cacao or chocolate chips. Hot cold soft crunchy, 10/10. A lot of places in SB just don't put effort in to dessert so it's refreshing to find a restaurant that does. Black Sheep reminds me of nice meals I've had in Europe

Everything was perfect. We had a great time. Delicious food, friendly staff, nice atmosphere. Would for sure dine here again. Also did not feel it was too overpriced. We did take advantage of their happy hour special. Highly recommend.
We especially loved the crudo, and the salad was so yummy!!!

We finally came back to the new place after 3 years. The service was perfect, very friendly and kind staff! I really liked the onion soup, escargots and narrow toasts. We took the day boat catch but it was over cooked unfortunately and I didn’t enjoy the beets that were to vinegary.

Loved the cozy atmosphere and the waitstaff were friendly.
The food was truly delicious, but the tasting menu portions were on the smaller side for our liking. We went for Thanksgiving, and they gave us only two slices of turkey for four people to share. Overall this restaurant had very nice vibes and carefully curated menu, albeit a tad pricey.

I’m working towards becoming a “regular” customer here. I’ve been several times this fall… sometimes solo or sometimes with friends. I’ve done the amazing valued early prix fixe, the decadent full tasting menu and also just ordered a La Carte. The food is truly great quality and I think very fairly priced. Sit at the bar with bartender extraordinaire Jess, who has great recommendations on food and wine and always makes me right feel at home!

Our party of three each opted for the 4-course tasting menu that came highly recommended. For the first course, a roasted beet and goat cheese salad, and a tuna crudo. Both were good, but we only received the two small plates for the three of us. Next came hand rolled ricotta cavatelli with a lovely mushroom sauce, and a cow au vin. Again, both were good, the mushroom cavatelli ended up being my favorite dish of the night, and I would have loved more. I looked over at the party of two sat next to us and they were receiving the same two plates, which seemed odd given we were paying for three tasting menus I thought, not two. After a brief wait out came the desserts to our surprise. This time three plates, one for each of us. The crème brûlée, profiterole, and chocolate tart were all tasty.

Overall we were served 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, and 3 desserts. That's 3 courses out of the 4 we were supposed to receive. The tasting menu posted online on their website confirms that we were supposed to receive a 3rd course of fish and braised short ribs before dessert. I also can't help but feel cheated at seeing the party of two next to us receiving the same two plates for each course despite us being a party of three and paying for three tasting menus. The bill came came out pricey with three $72 tasting menus, of which we seem to have received 7 of the 12 courses. While I have no complaints about the quality of the food we were served, it is impossible for me to recommend this restaurant to anyone due to the food we weren't served.
