Portora Castle was constructed in 1613 by Sir William Cole. The structure comprised a three-story house spanning the bawn's width, fortified by four circular towers. Although resilient during the 1641 rising and the events of 1688, the castle succumbed to makeshift explosives in 1859. The two tall round towers on the northwest were integral to the house, featuring defensive gun-loops and remnants of fireplaces. River dredging claimed the east flanker tower, but the south tower, connected to the house, still stands, albeit shorter.
