The hotel has great potential! Rooms and general amenities are gorgeous. Staff are mostly wonderful. Actual dinner and breakfast in the restaurant function well. Location is good for tourists - a bit mobbed when you walk outside but that’s ideal for many probably.

There are some things they still need to work out:

Most importantly, bar service is absolutely terrible. It is as if the staff are there to just hang around or clean dishes. I went on multiple occasions and service was dreadful each time. This seems consistent with other reviews. I once left and went to the Four Seasons after getting so frustrated (where service is fabulous even for non guests!).

Construction site outside so cars can’t pull up. Easy fix is to have porters receive check in’s. Instead I had to wheel my luggage up in the rain not only at my arrival but also again at my departure - not a good look!

Noise - I faced the courtyard and you can hear absolutely nothing outside which is lovely. Unfortunately you’ll hear every step and whisper in the hallway, every door slam, and they were also doing maintenance (on a Fri/Sat) directly above me during my stay. So relaxing in the gorgeous room was quite hard.

With all of this said I’d still go with 4-4.5 stars because I see lots of potential. The bar situation which again was beyond horrible brings me to 3. Replace the bar staff and you’re on to something with a few kinks to work out.

Our first stop in Spain, and it certainly left us with high expectations. We've stayed at multiple Thompson Hotels and they are the best when it comes to Hyatt luxury hotels. Mario was our host, and he made sure to check on us every time he saw us to make sure we were satisfied with the hotel. Claudia at the bar is a little ray of sunshine. She sings, she's friendly, and she is always smiling and ready to serve. We saw her multiple times and she took care of us very well. We started our stay with a welcome drink and jamon with the little crunchy bread. Great way to welcome us to Spain. Great location close to the shops for some cheap shopping. We ended up needing better walking socks than what we brought. The only "hiccup" was when we were checking out of the hotel, the host knew we had an uber coming so when he said "Michael" we assumed it was us. About 10 min after we left, our Uber driver called us and was looking for us. Oops! Wrong Michael! Easy fix. No problem, I still enjoyed our stay very much.

One of the best hotel experiences we've ever had was at the Thompson Madrid. We used a suite upgrade certificate and the room was ridiculous, in a good way. HUGE. Terrace. The room experience itself was a 10/10. The team at the Thompson was also incredibly helpful and nice, recognizing my birthday with a gift, helping to coordinate tickets to a sold out Real Madrid match, getting us a room to rest in until ours was ready (after a 06:00 arrival). Amazing all around we hope to be back.

Well located and comfortable rooms let down by poor service. Entire rooftop was closed despite 25 degree temperatures and bright sunshine. Admittedly the weather is unusual for March but this was disappointing all the same. There was a queue for breakfast so I decided to find breakfast outside, which suited me and eased pressure on the hotel. Unfortunately the staff refused to refund the breakfast or offer any kind of compensation or gesture at all .
