I booked a table at Sole for my Fiancée's birthday, fully expecting a memorable occasion in seafood excellence. Unfortunately that couldn't have been furtuer from what we received. Within one minute of taking our seats and perusing the menu, our waitress asked if we were ready to order. Her demeanour was one of haste and impatience. Fortunately a second waitress happened to take over, whose mannerisms we cannot fault.
The food itself however left a lot to be desired. While quality is earmarked at Sole, I have never left a restaurant still hungry. Portion sizes across the board were staggeringly small, including a near €100 lobster with barely enough meat to fill a ramekin dish. Moreover, the baby potatoes side were partially bruised, and the scallops to start lacked in the expected succulence and flavour. The linguine main was tasty, but lacking in actual seafood with a mere x3 pieces of crab. Finally, no bread was presented to the table despite there being butter on the table; a complaint truly emblematic of the broader insufficiencies.
I informed the waitress of our dissatisfaction and she apologised sincerely, promising to relay the information. However nothing further came of it despite a present restaurant manager who regularly checked up on guests at one particular table - seemingly overlooking all others, including ours.
A truly disappointing and frustrating experience, and a special birthday occasion dampened by its shortcomings.
Το servis καλό, ευγενικά τα άτομα που δουλεύουν.
We had the 6 course tasting menu and we love it very much. Just one small complaint that our 6 course menu is coming with tea or coffee but when the restaurant becomes so busy when the dessert is served, our tea or coffee never shows and we forgot to ask for our tea.
Expensive in my view. In all honesty I couldn't recommend to friends and I wouldn't be tempted back.
Had a meal in a fish restaurant in Killarney recently which was significantly less expensive and which served a three course meal that was streets ahead of the food we got in Sole.
Sole has been on my list for ages. I wanted to like it but it just didnt live up to the hype. Not even close.
My partner ordered fish and chips. This is where I lost all credibility for choosing restaurants. The fish was a generous portion but my partner struggled to eat it, finding it over breaded and mushy. The chips were room temp and did not seem freshly made to order. My partner was livid to pay 33€ for this when she had paid less at Matt the Thresher for the exact same meal the night before and found it to be a much higher standard.
I did find the service attendants were good at clearing and setting the table in between courses. The restaurant also asked about our meals and when a hesitation by us was noticed, and they heard my reluctant comment that it was “fine,” they took off one drink and our lemon tart dessert from the bill.
The tart was definitely good and that I can also recommend. But we just felt let down by the whole meal and the fish should have been taken off as it was a higher value. I noticed a few other recent reviews felt this place is overrated so I wonder if something has changed in the kitchen?
The starter was promising with a smoked salmon dish but the monkfish main appeared to lack any real flavour outside of the bacon it was wrapped in. Similarly, the the mussels included with the main were absolutely tasteless (prompting a brief worry I had somehow lost my sense of taste.)
A manager did enquire about what we feel could be done differently, although there was little follow up on our issue that the food appeared to be very bland. We regularly eat seafood at home and were at a loss as to how the dishes could be so lacking.
We left quite unhappy given the price paid for what was a disappointing meal.
For the main course I ordered the monk fish which looked insipid unappetising, the two mussels were so over cooked resembling leather. So dissatisfied as was there 5 mouths ago and loved the food.
Shame to see it drop a level .
