Horrible experience overall. We paid for a room with private bathroom which was not true, so we had to share the nasty public one (two showers, one of them was broken) that was in the hallway.
When we complained at the reception, they told us that there was nothing that could be done. We kindly asked for a complain form and surprisingly they said they didn't have any in the hostel and the only way to do so was via email – which I'm not sure in Italy, but in my country is completely illegal.
The first night we spent there they were celebrating an erasmus party (suprisigly it's a night club apart from a hostel?) which obviously was full of drunk teenagers – one of them dramatically puking at the entrance – and some weird people.
The staff working at the bar serving breakfast and drinks were agressive, intimidating and very likely with some severe drug addictions. Apart from that, they served breakfast every single day with paper cups instead of real glasses so they don't have to wash them (so ecofriendly yay!)
In conclussion, please, do a favour to yourself and avoid this place. Believe me, you deserve better than this.
The location, while not exactly central, wasn't bad for the price.
The bathrooms, as other have mentioned, are a safety issue. There is no bath mat so when you get out of the shower it is quite slippery.
Expensive food and drinks.
The rooms are very dirty and they don't clean very often
Twice a week they have Ibiza-style discos until 01:30 that make your bed vibrate and stops you from sleeping at all.
Staff are completely useless as well.
One of the calmest neighbourhoods I've ever been in, ruined by this disco. No wonder the locals hate tourists!
Hopefully I will remember to never give one penny of my money to this company ever again, as they are an absolute disgrace to hostels everywhere
I paid for one thing; to sleep in a bed, and they denied me this one thing. Then they refused to ask the DJ to turn the music down, and they refused to give me a full refund. The staff were laughing at me. What a disgraceful situation. DO NOT STAY HERE if you want a good night's sleep.
Everywhere in the world hostels have little signs saying "silence after 10 PM," but here they pay a DJ to keep everyone awake until 01:30. And they charge you €43 for the night!
Shocking even more because I've enjoyed my visit to Venice a lot, so calm and peaceful. Whoever thought that this disco is a good idea needs to think about finding a different job, because they have zero expertise in how a good hostel works
They said they would turn the volume down at midnight but, instead, they turned up both the volume and the bass
Truly shocking even more because they are well aware of the issue, having received multiple bad reviews which mention the disco noise until 01:30, and apologise in the superficial way that they do in every bad review, but fail to change. They only care about money and have no interest in providing the one thing that really matters in a hostel; A BED IN WHICH TO GET A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP
Then, the following morning, after 4 hours sleep, I go down to check out, and I tell the bar staff about my bad experience, and I ask if there is any chance of a free coffee. Basic customer service. The response? I get laughed at AGAIN and told no, this time by the French bartender. Awful hostel, awful staff. I will never ever stay in a Generator hostel again, and, of course, I will not pay a cent to them for a coffee or croissant. TERRIBLE HOSTEL
Living in the shared room is much more comfortable than I expected, especially thanks to the privacy you get there, in that beds are occupied by walls from all the sides except the one using for the entrance. In my opinion there should be more opportunities to get into toilette, sometimes it could be challenging for you.
Don’t forget to prepare 20€ for traffic transport from the city center into Guidecca. In spite of this fact it’s even more economic than buying accomodation in the city center. I will recommend you to bring a padlock, if you are going to stay over more than one night. I stayed for only one, so I hadn’t take it.
Firstly, they have a problem with double booking beds. People are arriving and their beds aren't available. They have a history of kicking girls out late at night when someone else has taken their bed.
Secondly, the cleaners took some of my clothes and the hostel has refused to refund me. They're ignoring all my emails.
Thirdly, the bathrooms are tiny & gross. Theres no where to get changed without getting wet.
And lastly, the location requires taking a boat ride. Its easy, but its not ideal. Especially if you arrive late and the bed is already full.
The Good:
- Location.
- The coffee
The Bad:
- No kitchen, kitchenette, kettle or anywhere to prepare food. Want to bring in take out to eat? Nope cant eat food not purchased at the hostel in the common area or rooms.
- Bathrooms are terribly designed and dirty. Dirt always on the floor and broken shower fittings. Arranged facing each other so I am watching other people shower through (mostly) see-through glass.
- The hostel is a chain, and comes off as money hungry. Forgot ear plugs (even though we are blasting music) that will cost you. Need to leave your luggage, that will cost you. Need a mug of hot water, that will cost you….
- There is not chill area to sit, other than the rooms, you can only sit on the ground floor, which is constantly playing music, and branded with cliche millennial slogans (including b roll of DJ Kalid playing daily)
The Ugly:
- On party nights the entire ground level of the hostel turns into a club. Listening to thrift-shop blasting while you are in bed is pretty bad. But worse than that, there is no key card entry between the club and the levels where the rooms are, so you can find 18 year-olds running around on your level liking each other a bit too much in the bathrooms (yes i was unlucky enough to walk in on this).
No kitchen/kitchenette, nowhere to chill and eat your own food and having to pay 0.5€ for hot water sucks.
Mouldy and poorly designed bathrooms.
Downstairs turned into a club on the Saturday night we were there and people in the club can access the floors where the rooms are. I walked past numerous people hooking up in the stairwell and banging in the bathroom.
Has a safe vibe which is great and cappuccinos were yum.
The top reason I’m reviewing is the bathroom situation so I don’t want that to get lost. The showers flooded within 30seconds of having the water on. Staph infections waiting to happen. Thankful I brought shoes but still even then I was fully underwater. It flooded out until the bathroom itself and made it a muddy mess for anyone who simply just wanted to go to the bathroom quickly. The mold on the ceilings and grout is revolting and obvious. If you have mold issues like that at least attempt to improve the situation or warn patrons. All around bathroom situation needs major attention.
Soap machine was broken made a mess everywhere. I spent very little time in there needless to say. I had to shower in under two min unless I wanted to stand in the muck from the clogged drain around my feet. You can imagine the weird murky water. Plus after being in 90degree weather you just want to feel cool and clean. Needless to say do not expect that here ever.
Nothing good to say about attention to cleanliness. Concern for safety of our sleeping bodies available for anyone who wanted to come into our room.
Room was clean. It held 16people. The ac was non existent which yes it’s June and a hostel but still 16people all sweating it was bad. The unit have so much mildew and dust in them I’m sure that is one of the reasons.
The door key card was not useful because our door remained unlocked the entire stay even after we alerted staff. That was frustrating.
The only nice part of the whole place is the lobby. Didn’t use it though simply because I didn’t want to give them anymore of my money and needed to cool off outside.
I am woman and used that bathroom but verified with my brother that his situation wasn’t any different. Maybe less flooding because of less long hair clogging issues but gross.
It's close to the water bus station and the view is amazing, but everything else is awful.
First of all, even though it's a youth hostel, you can't bring food into the common area on the first floor.
You can only bring in things you buy at the restaurant in the building, and there's nothing that looks tasty.
I'm staying at youth hostels to save money, so why should I pay for expensive and not tasty things?
Also, I've stayed in a lot of hostels, but this one has the smallest room, and it's very uncomfortable because they've just crammed the beds in there just to make a profit.
To top it off, there's no soundproofing at all, so the common area keeps playing blaring music until late at night, making it impossible to sleep.
The attached videos are taken at midnight and 12:30am respectively.
I asked the receptionist to be a little quieter, but she didn't take me seriously.
She said, "I'll explain if I talk to you," but what kind of idiot wants to argue at 12:30 at night?
It's cheap and attractive, but I'd recommend staying at another hotel even if it costs a little more.
The one in Venice was quite nice, even though I was only there for just one night. As an Italian Citizen who wishes to experience actually living in Italy, it is really fun to stay in Hostels, and I am also sort of a Digital Nomad.
The only real criticism I have about this place is that they could use more electrical outlets in the common area.
Maybe that will attract people who will wish to also live in Venice. Employees of the hostel get a great deal for lodging. They must really enjoy living in Venice.
