The positives. I honestly found this place one of the prettiest little neighborhood restaurants I’ve been to. Ceiling details, wood accents, a comfy bar. It simply felt very comfortable.
The service, compared to most Parisian restaurants (including high-priced ones) was very good. My server was very friendly, attentive, and tolerant of my French.
The prices were quite reasonable. Nothing was ridiculously expensive for its quality or portion.
Now the food. Please understand that it wasn’t bad. It just wasn’t great. The menu’s very extensive, which often isn’t a good sign—hard to be great at everything. They have the traditional French fare and some not-so traditional (French toast, salmon ceviche) as well. To be very fair to them, I wasn’t adventurous. I came for the cafe gourmands and ended up also getting oysters and cheese. They were as one woukd expect, just fine. Both were good selections and tasty, if not anything to write home about.
I have to say, though, that the cafe gourmands did not disappoint. I had espresso with milk, which was delicious. The three desserts were a chocolate cake, a more mousse-like cake, and I think a carrot cake. All were delicious and sprinkled with this topping that had the same texture as Trix cereal.
If you’re looking for a local-feeling, comfortable, reasonably priced place to snack where you can people watch or simply drink in the neighborhood, Le Vrai Paris is an excellent choice.
