Ebony is a beautiful forest reserve near the Chamarel Seven Colored Earth Geopark. In fact, being more interested in nature than touristic locations, we decided to visit the geopark only because we had booked a hike in the Ebony forest. To our surprise, the former was more rewarding. Not that the reserve or the hike were not great. But their website had given us higher expectations about the guided tour, especially after our experience at Île aux Aigrettes (details in its review).
We thought we would first be taken into the forest by a guide, and then allowed to explore on our own. But there was no one available. So we found a guide after a short hike to the raised walkway. He then gave us a largely rote description (most of which was already on the information boards placed along the walkway), and the rest was more about the procedures rather than the species of birds and animals being saved from the brink of extinction. At the wildlife film room, the screen was blank and the room, empty. The museum had a lot of information but the room was musty because of which we couldn’t spend much time inside. Overall, it was evident that the reserve was established with a vision and a lot of effort went into creating it. But we felt the enthusiasm in running the daily operations is a bit lacking…
Our self-guided hike was good though – the view was great; and we saw a Mauritian flying fox, a Mascarene paradise-flycatcher, a couple of giant tortoises (up close in the wild!), and even two tropicbirds in the distance! The trails are marked. Hikers can click a photo of the route map and take the paths they wish to at their own leisure. It is highly recommended to carry mosquito repellent, water bottles (can be refilled at the Visitor centre), cap and sunscreen.

That's fantastic what these guys are doing: restauration of the endemic forest, very pleasant walk part of it being guided, part of it where you can find tortoise in the wild, then walk up to the view point. Highly recommended!

The ebony forest hike is wonderful with great views! Highly recommended! Make sure you arrive by 2pm latest to ensure enough time to reach the end viewpoint. The Museum is basic but bery informative. You need to pay seperately for the ebony forest entry (not included in chamarel entrance)

Superbe lieu à ne pas manquer ! Un guide du parc nous a raconté les objectifs du parc : reconstituer la forêt avec les espèces et bois endémiques (ébène). Sentiers accessibles, et vues magnifiques.

Un très beau parc naturel et un point de vue à 360 degrés depuis le piton canot, magnifique. La visite guidée de la passerelle surélevée avec Damien est un tres bon moment de partage et de culture. A faire absolument en plus de la beauté du lieu, beaucoup moins de monde que sur les autres sites de Chamarel.

Wir haben am 6.Juli an einer sehr informative Birdwatching-Tour teilgenommen! Man lernt nicht nur etwas über die endemischen Vögel und das namensgebense Ebenholz, sondern auch über die Geschichte der Insel, die mühsame Arbeit der Naturschützer, den Wald mit Flora und Fauna zu erhalten und wiederherzustellen. Auf alle Fragen wurde sehr nett eingegangen, wir hatten viel Zeit, die Vögel zu fotografieren und überhaupt zu suchen/ zu finden. Ein Highlight war zwischendurch die Aussicht auf den Ozean, auf Le Morne und Umgebung vom Viewpoint aus mit kleinem, frisch zubereiteten Snack und Getränken. Eine wunderschöne Insel und ein herrlicher Wald, den man gut durchwandern kann. Man sollte bei der Birdwatching Tour allerdings schon etwas trittsicher sein, die Wege führen über Wurzelwerk und sind teilweise etwas steil, bei feuchtem Untergrund wohl auch etwas rutschig.
Alles in allem eine sehr empfehlenswerte kleine Wanderung durch einen ganz besonderen Wald! Jedem Vogelfreund dürfte das Herz aufgehen, wenn man den seltenen Mauritiusfalken erspäht, einen Maskarenenparadiesschnäpper oder einen Mauritiusolivbrillenvogel! Die Rosentauben haben sich nicht gezeigt, die haben wir aber an anderer Stelle beobachten können.
Die Ausblicke auf dem Wald an sich, die sich immer wieder bieten sind auch nicht zu verachten! Tolle Landschaft, die hoffentlich noch lange erhalten bleibt! Es lohnt sich!!!

Super schöner Ausflug! Wir waren sehr begeistert von der Führung und den interessanten Informationen zur Geschichte und Vegetation von Mauritius. Vielen Dank, an unseren netten Guide Avish. Wer etwas mehr über Mauritius erfahren und ein Eindruck haben möchte, wie schön die Insel einmal ausgesehen hat sollte hier vorbeischauen. Wir empfehlen etwas Zeit mitzubringen, um die vielen Wanderwege genießen zu können. Vielen Dank nochmals an das Team von Ebony Forest. Sabine und Marcus

On a fait un tour incroyable en 4x4, un personnel au top, merci mil fois à Damien et sa passion et l’amour qu’il a pour cet endroit, c’est grâce à des personnes comme lui, qu’on prend conscience de l’importance de respecter l’environnement, et qu’on peut coexister sans nuire ????????????????

The ebony forest is well worth the visit! A few people complained about the paths and signage, but this wasn't really a problem for us, there is usually only one way to go! The walk is beautiful and goes quicker than expected. We recommend walking along the ridgeline trail nd walking back along the main path. The walk back is very easy and relatively quick!

Wir haben die Love-Tree Tour mit Guide Chris gemacht, War gut, prima Aussicht, gute Erklärungen französich & Englisch, über TripAdvisor zu teuer, schwer im Gelände zu finden, Anreise a.d. Norden kompliziert und sehr teuer, Verpflegung und Baumpflanzung inkludiert, einige Tiere gesehen, sehr schützenswertes Gebiet. DANKE

Visited the Ebony Forest in Mauritius and started with an informative short museum tour about the island. The walk through the forest was refreshing, showcasing the native ebony trees leading to the summit. For an easier or quick ascent, a guided jeep tour is available, where guides like Krish offer friendly and helpful insights. A must see for those interested in Mauritius's natural history and scenic beauty.

Das Zusatzticket lohnt sich insbesondere dann, wenn man etwas wandern gehen möchte. Hier geht es durch den tiefsten Dschungel hoch zu tollen Aussichtspunkten. Auch freilaufende Schildkröten sind hier zu entdecken. Man sollte früh starten - die Wanderung ist durchaus schweißtreibend.

Après avoir fait un Guided Trek en juillet 2023, nous avons cette fois décidé de faire le Birdwatching tour.

Lors de nos 2 visites, nous avons apprécié le professionnalisme et la gentillesse de nos guide et la richesse de la nature à Ebony Forest .

Interessant, leerzaam, ecologisch verantwoord. Dit is een echt highlight in Mauritius. En we hebben een ebony boom geplant in het woud. Goed verzorgde rondleiding door bevlogen jonge mensen.

Super interesrting and very beautiful! Just next to 7 couloured earth but so much better! The hike is very nice and you can a lot about the surrounding nature in the museum. During a guided walk you will learn about the private reforestation project which is fascinating! And you will be able to see turtles just on the trail and beautiful views from the Point Sublime. Highly recommend!

It is a wonderful place. Well looked after and so important for nature. A great project to have a piece of Mauritius as it used to be before people arrived. The easy guided walk was informative and beautiful . We have been twice on this trip. There are various options to reach Sublime Point. We hiked and it was enjoyable. The bar and snack bar is delightful. We also hiked to the top of Piton Canot. It is steep and care is needed and worth it for the fantastic view.

Feb24- disappointed they had no guide for the published 25 minute green tour.
Only the longer hike tours and you needed proper hiking boots for those. Or so they said.
I also getting the impression Mauritius likes getting it's own value for money i.e. if they can make more money from a larger group they find a way, but smaller (pair) they will not. Also 2 groups came after us with trainers on...we didn't stay to see if they were also turned away or stayed for a tour
Shame, as like the eco ideas and issues it covers.

Pour ceux qui cherche une randonnée autre que Le morne, le must do est Ebony forest

Adapté aux familles, aux sportifs et randonneurs.
Tortues en liberté, point de vue à coupe le souffle, et surtout des guides passionnés.
Vous en apprendrez plus sur la forêt primaire, les espèces , les oiseaux grâce à un guide passionné (guide gratuit) qui vous accompagne sur la passerelle, grosse pensée pour Damien, très bon guide passionné par ce qu'il fait, un très bon porte parole du projet Ebony et quel parcours Bravo Damien.
Votre billet sert en plus à la reforestation, bref et en plus vous réalisez une bonne action, et un petit musée climatisé et toilettes présentes en bas et même au point de vue accompagné d'un snack.

Great place. Nice walk in the forest. Go to the peak, the view is beautiful. The people working there seems dedicated and very helpful. They were able to convert more than half to the endemic species.
