La taverne Diporto assure avant tout un voyage dans le temps et dans l’authenticité. La taverne des « maudits » d’autrefois, fréquentée par des poètes de l’entre-deux-guerres, a rouvert ses portes pour le plus grand plaisir des Athéniens qui apprécient les vraies valeurs de la vie. La cuisine qu'on y mange se fait traditionnelle mais délicieuse, le vin résiné de la maison excellent. L'été, quelques tables sous les bougainvillées promettent de passer un moment charmant. C’est une adresse culte et c’est un must absolu pour découvrir un visage authentique d'Athènes.

Diporto - whose name means “having two doors" - is just fantastic. Nothing fancy. Not even menus. Not even a sign on the door to indicate you've arrived. You enter via one of the two stairways into this basement taverna. You're sat at a table - expect to share tables if busy - the choice is fish or not to fish. Then the half a carafe of white wine, bread, chickpeas, fava beans and potato stew are brought within moments without you requesting them specifically. Part way through the chopped salad and fish arrives. All hearty, unpretentious stuff. Like going round to a friends for lunch. Seek this place out and enjoy you're given.

There was quite a queue as the restaurant was quite busy. Staff were very lovely and helpful, it had a homely feel and very well priced! Worth a visit if you are in the area

Best chickpea soup and soups I have ever tasted in my entire life. I am from America and came to Greece for vacation and I am extremely thankful that I was able to taste the food it tasted like it was made with so much love and the hospitality was really great! Will most definitely come back here when I come back to Greece!! Everyone must try this place!!

However it’s all somehow confusing, there’s one menu, which you get served as soon as you sit. But you are not informed about possible options of ordering something “extra”. I think that’s definitely missing, like an instruction from the staff of how things work there.
