My family and I went in not knowing what to expect but the MoMu was a truly good surprise. First of all, the building inside is beautiful. Apparently the museum is located underneath the famous Antwerp fashion academy.
Kids enter for free so we only ended up paying for 2 adults. Inside we had access to the museum’s fixed collection and 2 temporary exhibitions. The items are displayed beautifully and were accompanied by a lot of interesting pieces of information. The fixed collection highlights the works of famous Belgian designers of which there are apparently a lot.
Great museum and a must see for anyone remotely interested in fashion.
The actual museum has two floors, consisting of the said permanent collection and a temporary exhibition. Most of the pieces of the permanent collection revolve around the "Antwerp six" and their craftmanship. Also there are some historical pieces. I do liked the explanations, and I've learned new things. At the same time the flow of the exhibition felt a bit random. First part got into detail about particular designers. Then after a view displaywindows, there were historical pieces. I would have appreciated if both themes received more room, as the alternation felt quite "sudden".
I did really like the temporary collection (Simone Rocha and others). The chose theme was an interesting angle to weave the stories of different artists together and get to know them in a novel way.
YET I would recommend the staff to be less agressive to the (French-speaking) visitors.
It is not exactly the kind of behaviour I would expect from a cultural place which pretends to be open to every single person.
A missed opportunity
