A brillar ...
The beach isn’t really a swimming beach, which is fine, but expect to be approached by locals selling excursions, massages, trinkets, and who knows what else.
The steakhouse and hibachi restaurants were very good and service there was great. The Tex-Mex consistently had slow service, to the point we wondered if we were forgotten. However the food was good whenever it showed up. The buffet was pretty predicable and generally pretty good. For some reason waiting to be seated always seemed to take so long; not sure why you can’t just seat yourself.
Overall it wasn’t a bad experience but not what we expected from a “5-star” resort.
Room is noted in the brochure they handed me at check in as having a stocked fridge with drinks and water. Fridge empty…. Room was ROASTING hot when I arrived… I turned it all the way down and went for a walk. Still not really cool - maybe my standards are too high.
Restaurants have timing gaps where there is NOTHING available! I stopped by the buffet… terrible… dude never did bring me the drink I asked for. Grabbed a burger at the Guys Burger place… 10 minute wait for a dried out burger. One bite, in the trash…
Went to the gym, was stopped on the way in and asked to fill out a form. Nice lady started running down spa packages I could add on before I stopped her.
Pool was Ok, but too many kids. Also there were guys there trying to hype up the crowd with bubble cannons… I was starting to look like a Cisco video so I headed out.
I have to mention that this resort is built into the side of a STEEP hill. Walking around is a real workout. This place is near nothing… took just under an hour to get here from LIR on a private transfer.
I am still in day 1 or a 5 day stay and I’m actually thinking about leaving tomorrow. I am so disappointed with this place… I should have listened to the bad reviews. This feel like those time share traps… I just waiting for that to start… AVOID!
It was so frustrating, I’m here writing a review 2 years later.
Next, the photographer was HORRIBLE. I kept asking for the name of my photographer so I could see his previous work, but I never received his info. We got married in July when the humidity was intense. Both my husband and I were sweating profusely during the photo shoot outside. I voiced my concern on what the photos would look like. Multiple times I was assured that the photos would be edited and we would both look amazing. WRONG. when I got my “edited” pictures back, it looked like raw unfiltered/unedited photos taken by an amateur. To make matters worse, I took the time to circle sweat beads off my face, or other unwanted visuals, like a hand sanitizer station or waiter in the background, but the photographer refused to make any “additional” edits. To him, changing the filter from color to black and white was sufficient enough.
Needless to say, when I return back to the states, I had to send all of my photos to another professional pay an additional fee to get them to look decent.
On the actual day of the wedding, Maria said that she would be hands-on and working behind the scenes to make sure everything was running smoothly. Again, this was not the case. My wedding party was pretty small under 20 people and not everyone got served at the same time, there was confusion on when the main dance should happen, cutting the cake, and other issues. At the end of the wedding, they would not let me take a piece of my cake or my flowers Back to my room!!!! Mind you the centerpieces were extremely expensive and very small.
Overall horrible experience I’m so disappointed that we paid so much money and got a mediocre wedding
Rooms and overall areas seemed to be pretty clean and a nice smell is perceived all around the hotel
Pool bar areas lacked water bottles, which is a must for this type of hotels
Asked for Vodka on 2 separate days on both of the pool bars and the bartender said he was sorry, but Vodka was out of stock.
Came back at night and same story, around 7:00 pm, no Vodka left. Poor planning on bar restocking is terrible.
Also, bar staff is not trained properly on making the cocktails similar or equal on all areas. Bartenders were making excessive drinks and this could lead to overspending on ingredients.
The restaurants don't have a reservation system that could be done over the phone or app. This makes difficult to plan if visiting multiple restaurants on 1 night.
I cut myself on my left leg and when approached Front Desk for assistance, the only thing that I was offered was a crew that could come and clean my wound. Nobody, absolutely no manager approached to me and asked why or how I felt or if anything could've been done for me, or if I needed anything.
I left bleeding to my room and had to clean myself.
Lunch buffet seemed to have leftover food and some items looked stale from previous days.
Final score for me 3 out of 5
El Staff sirve todo con mala gana, pésimo sistema de buffet. Y la comida sosa y sin sabor.
Como 2 horas intentando hacer check out. Dijeron que recogían las maletas a las 11am y fui saliendo del hotel a las 2 PM.
Lo único que rescato es la habitación, es bonita y confortable. Pero todo lo demás NO.
No vale la pena visitarlo.
Our disappointment began at the entrance, where we waited in a car lane for about 45 minutes to access the resort. Initially, things seemed fine, but the situation deteriorated rapidly. On the first night, we visited the sports bar, which was supposed to be open until 1 am, but they ran out of beer at 11:30 and depleted all liquor by 12:15. What's worse, the sports bar was infested with underage guests who were not only drinking but already intoxicated.
When we raised our concerns with a manager, we were met with a dismissive response. They claimed it wasn't the hotel's responsibility to regulate who entered the sports bar, insisting that it was the parents' duty, not theirs. This was a major red flag.
We tried to salvage our "Star Class" experience by making use of the amenities, but it was a series of disappointments. At 10 am, we went to the pool expecting refreshments, only to find that there was no beer, and we had to wait until past noon for it to arrive. Tonic water, a basic ingredient for our preferred drinks, was also consistently unavailable at various bars.
Our dining experiences were equally frustrating. Breakfast at the restaurant required us to wait over an hour for our food, wasting valuable time we could have spent enjoying our limited stay. Our reservation at the steakhouse for 9 pm resulted in us waiting an hour for our food, leaving us hungry and frustrated. To make matters worse, when we requested refills for our drinks, we were informed that the staff responsible had already gone home for the day, leaving us without simple refreshments like Pepsi.
We voiced our complaints to multiple managers, who promised that someone would reach out to us, but we never received any follow-up. This experience has left us deeply dissatisfied, and we are determined never to return to this hotel. Furthermore, we have spread the word to our friends in three different countries, warning them to steer clear of this establishment. Planet Hollywood all-inclusive in Costa Rica fell far short of our expectations, and I would strongly advise others to consider alternative options for their vacation.
First off, I went in September and there was so much beautiful greenery. The people, locals, employees were all so nice and professional.
We had star class status, check in went smoothly, we were introduced to our personal assistant Alonso, who was absolutely magnificent! We went to our room which had a lovely view and Alonso went over all the details with us and all went well from there.
Here are the pros and cons:
beautiful resort everything as pictured
Beds were comfy
the best food, Mexican, Italian, guys burgers, steakhouse and even the buffet
drinks, iced caramel latte at fuel margarita, sangria, special at the sports bar w jalapeños n pineapple
karaoke was fun and Bryan was a great D.J.
overall clean resort
Very loud flush with toilet
beach had black sand, which wasn't appealing, not enough beach chairs
overall this is a great location and amazing experience, I will definitely visit again and so should you!
It's VERY clean and well maintained. The staff was friendly and accomodating. Access entering the resort was tightly controlled an we felt very safe on the property.
We enjoyed our morning trips to the Fuel coffee bar, the servers were great and the espresso drinks and gelato were really good. We also had access to a private pool and cabana with a personal attendant, this area was peaceful and relaxing. As others have mentioned, its best to use the shuttles as the rooms/buildings are staggered on a hill and there is a steep uphill walk to the lobby/main building.
Now, some of the things that weren't so great...the timing of the shuttles can be inconsistent, we had waits less than 10 minutes at times to one evening nearly 25 minutes.
The food, was not great. The only restaurant we didn't try was the steakhouse, but in all others we just found many of dishes to lack flavor and many of the meats (beef/fish) were overcooked and tough or chewy. Most of the all-inclusive drinks we ordered were rather weak, we primarily ended up ordering champagne and mango mimosas.
There are several vendors on the beach, as soon as we stepped on the beach we were approached by vendors selling massages, spa services, jewelry and other trinkets.
The nightlife is limited. There is a sportsbar that is open late and has karaoke, a DJ and you can order late night bites. However, the pools close at 7p and the restaurants close at 10p. We were with a group and had acces to a suite with a pool table, bar, and a hot tub however by 9pm we had been approached by hotel staff 3 times about noise complaints and that children were trying to sleep in adjacent rooms. The resort seems to attract families with children, however there were no designated adult only area's.
The resort is rather isolated, and there is really nothing in walking distance, you would need to purchase an excursion to explore the island.
As for airport transportation we booked and prepaid through Nexus as this company was recommended by the resort. Our pick-up for return to the airport was nearly 30 minutes late and when we had the bellman call to inquire as to the where abouts of our driver we could hear them arguing and were given no explanation or apology for the tardiness. So, if you're working with a travel agency you should consider having the agent book it for you.
I would return to Costa Rica, but probably not this resort.
The all inclusive resort was a welcome change from a do it all yourself vacation. The resort was small compared to a larger resort such as sandals, and that was the way we liked it. You felt welcomed and you were able to make a personal connection with the staff and the other visitors. The rooms were excellent, modern, clean, and have great amities including rain shower with a view and a daily stocked mini fridge. The restaurants offered a wide range of food which changed daily and always kept it fresh.
Must tries include the Italian restaurant and the Japanese resultant. The Buffet restaurant , So Cal, food was also well prepared and offered an overwhelming verities of food. Fuel coffee also makes a mean espresso and ice cream drink to keep you going through the day.
Our excursion were through nexus tours and were great examples of eco-tourism though none of them took us to the rim of an actual volcano
We also took a cave and snorkeling tour from one of the locals sailing them at the beach, this was great and really allowed us to explore the bay some cool rock formations and some local coral reefs.
We also rented a cabana for an up charge for a day at the star level which included a bottle of liquor (go for the 7year dark rum) and a personal assistant.
This resort is a hidden gem in the Marriott autograph collection, beautifully kept, a great deal, and a weird name. I think most travelers would enjoy a change of pace at this all inclusive resort.
Also don’t miss the fire show in the evening!
