CAMPING CHANTECLER * * * *

On our arrival we went straight to reception and were given a plan of the site and shown where to pitch-up. We were given advice on the local bus service, which proved helpful.
We then went to the motorhome service area to fill up with water, also the area for the grey and wc waste; basic and could certainly do with a re-vamp. It was smelly and right next to the bins nor was it particularly clean.
We then met a fellow traveller who told us that he couldn't get up to the pitch area indicated on the map because his motorhome was too big, and as his motorhome was smaller than ours he recommended that we tried the area where he'd pitched up, so we did.
We found a pitch on the hillside which was flat and which had electricity. The electric hook-ups are not the 3-pin that you'd normally find so you need an adapter, which we had. But we met another traveller in his hire van which did not have an adapter so we leant him a spare that I had.
The bar & restaurant wasn't open when we visited at 6.45 in the evening. There weren't many people around. The pool wasn't officially open and whilst it was in a really good spot, with good sunshine late into the evening, it wasn't particularly clean. So a paddle at best.
The main shower block is central to the site, not particularly modern but with everything necessary for a short stay. The water was always hot, after letting the shower run for a few minutes. Of the 6 toilet cubicles only 3 had working locks.
I didn't see the washblock being washed or cleaned and noticed that the wash-hand basins weren't particularly clean.
The location of the site is really good. It is minutes from the autoroute. Plus the bus services, 3 and 4, are within a 5 minute-walk from the front of the site. A 10-journey or trip ticket (only €10 - great value & easy to use) is available from the newsagent and tabac store which is right by where the number 3 & 4 buses start and finish. So that was really convenient. The number 3 takes about 7 to 8 minutes to get to the stop, Gambert, which is closest to the city centre. The number 4 is the bus required for the main railway station.
So although I've given the site 3 stars that's based on a low season review. I suspect in the main season the pool and washblocks are probably cleaner and the bar & restaurant are open. It provided us with a convenient spot to park our motorhome, to visit the city and to travel to Marseille for the rugby.
There is currently ground and building works taking place close to the rear of the main washblock and bar/restaurant, but this doesn't take place during the weekend.
At €105 for our 3 night stay it wasn't particularly cheap or good value for money. We'd paid less than half in Avignon for two nights with very similar services and quality of services.
Accueil souriant, et nuit ou l'on regarde les étoiles brillées.
